Nappies

WASHABLE NAPPIES

Why use them?

More and more parents are returning to washable nappies due to concerns about the effect disposable nappies are having on their baby and the environment. In Britain nearly 3 billion nappies are thrown away each year, each taking up to 200 years to biodegrade. Washable cloth nappies are made from natural materials that are kind to your baby’s skin and to the environment.

Will they cost more?

No, you will actually save money. It is estimated that a baby will use approx. 5,500 disposable nappies at a cost of over £1000 (not including the cost in taxes to deal with nappy waste)Using washable nappies should only cost between £400 - £750* depending on which style you choose. They can also be used if another baby comes along, making then even better value for money.

What do I actually need?

You will need between 16 and 24 nappies. You will also need a separate waterproof nappy pant. These are elasticated and are designed to prevent leaks. Pants don’t have to be changed at each nappy change, only when soiled. You should have 4 or 5 for each growth stage. It is important to get a good fit or leaks will occur. Flushable liners can be placed in the nappy so solid waste can be flushed down the toilet. They also help take the wetness away from the baby’s skin. For heavy wetters or night time there are booster liners for extra absorbency.

Which style do I choose?

We sell a variety of styles of nappies and members of staff are happy to talk these through with you to see what will suit your lifestyle and budget.

The most basic nappy we sell is the Terry Square, we can provide information on different folds.‘Motherease’ is a one-size popper fastening nappy and is one of the most popular designs, available in white or unbleached cotton, bamboo or organic. A one-size nappy can be used from birth to 40+lbs, the size and shape of the nappy can be change using folds and/or poppers. ‘TotsBots’ make a small nappy (birth –18lbs) and a large (up to 40lbs) which can be used as a follow on size from the small nappy or as a one-size. Both the Terry Squares and TotsBots can be fastened using nappy nippers.

Information on this leaflet comes from The Real Nappy Association and Green Baby.
